The very fact of this, regardless of the attitude to the movie, makes us, art house lovers and others, far away, unfortunately, from the mainstream of things, knowingly losers. If you like the movie, we’ll hear the sarcastic “and said that you do not like comics! ”, and if you do not like it, the evil “why did you come at all, you fucking haters?! ”. What’s my point? I mean, the Joker’s not a comic book, it’s a maniac thriller. It was also encouraging that Todd Phillips was the director. But, you know, it seems to me that in reality Venice was won by Roman Polanski’s movie (which actually took second place), just for political reasons, he was “not given” the Golden Lion. However, let’s talk about “The Joker”. Let’s start with the good stuff. The very idea of how to show the madness of the hero, who once became a cult villain, is good. And the way it goes into great power, of course, too. Moreover, the last 20-25 minutes of “The Joker” are so beautiful that the movie wants to forgive all the numerous disadvantages, which I will describe later. They mesmerize, evoke emotion, in some places delight. Separately, I want to praise another view of what’s happening in Gotham: in Wayne’s painting… Negative characters! Enemies of “ordinary” people! Where else are you gonna see this? The Joker is not a terrorist, not a bandit, he’s a symbol of the people. They believe in him, they believe in his erased clown image, the Joker is a symbol of freedom and shackles. And it’s shown above all the praise. It’s very tasteful, thanks to cameraman Lawrence Cher. The narrow corridors of the Joker, where the walls themselves are pressing against it, is great. And the alleys, the dumps, the subway, it’s stylish, you can’t say anything. The dirty, gloomy, marginal-filled fictional city of Gotham (a little less than totally New York City) is gorgeous. The only thing is that one who has decided to add so many expensive cars in the shots of an impoverished city, I want to strongly scold. Music is brilliant, from the brilliant Icelandic musician and composer Hildur Goodnadottir, who, by the way, received the Soundtrack Stars award in Venice. And now to the drawbacks that will never let you love this movie. To wait for the mentioned 20-25 minutes, you have to wait an hour and a half painfully. Transformation by transformation is wonderful, why is it so primitive? These close-ups with sticking in the wall, shouting “look, I’m so crazy! ” have shed their balls in the last century. A dark room with a white noise TV on for some reason. Really? Those are just two examples, but in fact, it’s inventive and primitive to show the whole Joker change process, and it’s boring to look at it. What’s missing as class is the Joker’s hero motivation. Problems and not of this scale are encountered in people’s lives (except, perhaps, the story with the Joker’s mother), but something in the world is not filled with madmen in general. The Joker is an offended man, isn’t he… A loser? It’s possible. Attention, question. What are the qualities that will make this hero a worthy opponent of Batman himself? Secondary characters? Screenwriters don’t know what it is. And I, for example, don’t know, maybe the problem is me: I was the one who couldn’t get into the Joker’s story. Actors? Joaquin Phoenix has always been one of my favorite actors since Crossing the Line. Now the claims that the Phoenix is a favorite actor of this or that audience are going crazy. But this does not cancel the incredibly cool benefit Joaquin in “The Joker”! But the supporting actors… They have no one to play. Even Robert De Niro just read his text. In my opinion, “The Joker” is an above average maniacal thriller. However, the cult of the movie is secured, mark my word.
